In a response to the ‘pre-notification’ of new mobile phone masts for Vodafone and Telefonica, Cambuslang Community Council has said that the community needs more information, especially the residents of the streets where the masts may be installed.

Vodafone and Telefonica are looking at eight sites in Cambuslang – Cambuslang Road, Rutherglen Road, Greenlees Road, East Kilbride Road, Somervell Park, Glasgow Road, Western Road and Arkle Terrace.

Given that there has been public concern over potentially harmful effects of emissions from masts, Cambuslang Community Council has proposed that the phone companies should hold a public meeting and answer questions and address concerns that residents may have. One of the proposed sites (Bakery building off Greenlees Road) is close to St Bride’s Primary School, and the Community Council has also requested details of any audit conducted (as recommended in a government report) on radiation emissions.  Previous audits across the UK have found emissions to be well below permissible limits, and without evidence of harm, but expert advice has recommended a ‘precautionary approach’.
